Athletes in Action this quarter have been up on their toes, as they were involved in the massive construction of a 3-in-1 basket ball court at the Nairobi Pentecostal Church, Karen. The project entails building one big court, and having two smaller ones within the same court. This project came about after the AIA team had faced the challenge of using other basket ball courts and having to pay a handsome fee for them. Thankfully, NPC Karen came on board as a partner, and the team was able to construct the court within the premises of the Church.
Athletes in Action, known to many as AIA, is a Church-based program whose main aim is to build spiritual movements everywhere through the platform of sports. AIA Kenya handles a variety of sports including Athletics, Rugby, Golf, Soccer, Swimming and basketball. The AIA team holds various activities annually, such as: breakfasts, trainings, weekly Bible Studies, monthly meetings and outreach life skills to the various members countrywide.
With the logo “One world to reach, One language of Sport, One message of Victory“, the AIA team has sought to partner with various sportsmen in their various fields of influence, who have powerful, Christ-centered testimonies.
Over the months of June and July, there have been three AIA staff from the U.S. who came to lend support to the Kenyan team. The three staff include Paul Cook and Paul Harris Davis, both of whom are athletes. They were instrumental in the construction of the Basket Ball court at NPC Karen, as well as providing access for the AIA team to areas that were previously unreached. Considering they were athletes, it was easier for them to penetrate the athlete circles, since they were able to better understand the conditions they face as athletes, and as such, they were able to integrate well with them.
The AIA team is really grateful for the quick connections that God has provided for them among the various sportsmen. “Rome was not built in a day! Thank God for the doors He has opened! Relationship building usually takes longer,” explained Dominic Moinogu, an AIA staff member. AIA desires to disciple athletes who focus on society as society looks up to them; and some of the bodies they are working with are: Athletics Kenya, and National Olympic Commission of Kenya.
The team recognizes that there was much more work to do, and they seek to reach such unreached athletes with the Gospel of God that does transform multitudes.
